Kristina + David planned the kind of wedding day that feels like home, but elevated...an intimate backyard celebration at David’s family home in Marengo, Illinois, surrounded by their closest 50 people.
Their day was the perfect blend of intentional and effortless: twinkle lights glowing above cocktail hour, Portillo’s catering (yes — iconic), and heartfelt connection woven into every moment. Instead of traditional speeches, guests shared personal messages during dinner, creating the kind of warmth you can’t stage.
One of my favorite parts of the day was how thoughtful and elevated every detail felt.... from the florals, to the table settings, to the way they designed the guest experience so intentionally. Guests carried parasols during the ceremony (which was honestly the most beautiful touch), and there was a pathway leading to the ceremony site at the bridge that felt like walking into a curated moment: floral pedestals, oversized white vases, baskets of greenery, all styled with care. And the best part? They DIY’d almost everything, which makes it even more meaningful knowing every element was created with their own hands and vision.
And let me tell you… it felt like the middle of summer — in October. It was HOT (80 degrees kind of hot) and super windy, the kind of weather that gives everything movement: veil, hair, florals, dresses and makes the whole day feel alive. It was one of those weddings where the light + wind + emotion created the dreamiest cinematic energy.
Even with such an intimate guest count, the energy at this wedding was unmatched. The dance floor was alive — everyone was dancing, singing their hearts out, and celebrating in the most joyful, unfiltered way. It truly felt like I wasn’t just there photographing the day… I was part of the family documenting it. And as if that wasn’t sweet enough, Kristina + David insisted my husband and I take home food because there was so much left over — which honestly tells you everything you need to know about the kind of people they are.
A relaxed, romantic, editorial backyard wedding filled with whites, greens, and gold — and proof that intimate celebrations can still feel unforgettable.
